Faith in Action: God and the Green Berets

It's said about soldiers in combat that there are no atheists in foxholes. Facing death can have a profound effect on our hope that God is real and can come to our defense. There are, however, other soldiers who go into battle as Christians, whose faith in Christ as their Lord and Savior is a matter that's settled before they hit the battlefield. We spoke with a few of these soldiers from the U.S. Army Green Beret unit at Fort Campbell, Ky., who shared how their faith has been shaped in combat.

Green Beret Weapons Specialist Don Bentley fought the battle of his life in Iraq in 2007. It was a dry and cloudless summer day with a temperature of 125 degrees. “We were in a gun battle for 12 straight hours. So tired, so hot. Fighting the whole time with no water,” Bentley recalls. By the end of the day, Bentley had led his troops with great success. He says the Lord was with him that day like He was with King David in his battles.
